The Smile Box

Last month while we were in Florida our niece Monica gave me a present that she spent two months making called The Smile Box. It does all that Monica had hoped for and so much more. Every time I open it feels like I’m opening a beautifully wrapped present.

Inside The Smile Box are letter-sized, multi-colored pastel envelopes waiting to be opened. Each envelope contains a surprise, an inspirational quote, a silly quote or a funny story but they are all intended to make me either smile or laugh.

One of my favorites so far is, “I read recipes the same way I read science fiction; I get to the end and think, “Well, that’s not going to happen.”” – Anonymous

Another favorite envelope contained a purple crazy straw and the quote, “I am thankful for laughter, except when milk comes out of my nose.”

One morning Mark and I were drinking coffee and we decided to open an envelope from The Smile Box. Mark opened the envelope, gave me a drink of coffee and before I had a chance to swallow it he read the quote out loud.

“Sometimes I laugh so hard the tears run down my leg.”

I started to laugh, which is dangerous because of my choking problem, so instead of swallowing and risking choking, I spit my coffee out all over the brand new shirt I was wearing. This quote made me think of Mark’s mom and sisters because they always have tears running down their legs when they laugh too hard.

Dear Monica and Ian,

I’ve enjoyed my little presents from you every day since I’ve seen you last. Thank you for making me smile and laugh.

I love you like crazy.

  1. Great idea and so full of love. I will borrow the idea for a future special occasion. We all need to smile and laugh more often. :)

  2. Thanks for the inspiration, we ALL need laughter, like light and water it keeps us alive!!
The other day at the grocery store, looking at apple juice ingredients, my beautiful wife asked “What’s pasteurized?” I said your forehead and kept walking. She must have stood there 10 seconds looking at that juice wondering why the heck that would be pertinent on juice??? Gotta love her.
